My good friend provided these for me to look at as he knows that I am interested in things that light up :)

These are perpose designed for one very specific task. Marshalling aircraft movements at night.

They are industrial grade in quality. They look to be made from polycarbonate tube and injection moulded plastics. They are weather sealed and are suitable for use in the rain / snow etc.

Most aircraft wands that I have seen on the net have just a single battery powered incandescent bulb or a string of low power LED's. These usually shine down a transluscent plastic tube of some description. This make them difficult to see against brightly lit airport buildings.

This is not the case with these wands. The illumination on the wands is direct from a fluorescent tube. Giving a very bright wand that is easy to see agaist brightly lit backgrounds.

As you can see from the pictures the wands look a bit like shortened lightsabres. They even have a cool power on yellow button. Just press once to turn on then press again to turn off.

The units also have 3 LED indicators. These are as follows.

Green:- Unit on Charge

Yellow :- Unit starting up (Illuminates very briefly when tube starter operates)

Red:- Battery low warning (Warning to charge units as soon as this is illuminated)

The wands are supplied with a mains powered charger that will charge both units at once in a couple of hours.

Not having the oppurtunity to stand in the middle of a large active airfield with 500 tonnes of Jumbo head towards me. I have no idea how these things should be used anger. But they do look to be made for the job. I think I would feel more confident that I could be seen than using a torch with a plastic cone over the end :)

Hopefully in the not to distant future these wand will be further improved and the design will use better battery technology to make the units lighter and run longer. Watch this space for more details.

Anyway thanks to Simon for the loan of the units to allow me to review another great product that lights up and brightens up my day :)

OK, now hopefully your interested where can you get them?
