This was one of my very first LED lights. It is a very efficient device especially considering I have had it over a year and it is still on its first set of batteries!

Features

This version of the light has 7 different modes of operation as listed below:-

1.) Timer
2.) On/Dim
3.) Flasher
4.) Strobe
5.) Dazzle
6.) S.O.S.
7.) Pulse

The unit is powered by 3 off AA batteries. These can be either alkaline or Lithium. If you use Lithium cells the weight reduction will allow the unit to float on water. The batteries are installed inside the two half's of the case. You need to remove 4 small screws to get into the case. This is probably not such a problem as the batteries last for such a long time. Once installed carefully re assemble the light without displacing the rubber gasket and your ready to go.

Operation is via the membrane keys on the top of the unit. These are clearly marked and pressing the 'Power' key will cause the unit to light up in the first of these modes 'Timer'.

In this mode the unit will power on in the highest setting and gradually get dimmer every 2.5 Minutes until it finally turns itself off. This is obvious as the four LED's go out in sequence until only one is lit, then 2.5 minutes after that Darkness. This it great for situations were you may forget to turn your light off or when it gets accidentally turned on in your bag.

The other modes can be selected with the mode button and adjustments made to them if possible with the 'adjust' key. For instance selecting 'On/Dim' then pressing 'adjust' will step through the various brightness levels on the LED's.

The various mode may of may not be useful to you depending who you are and what you do. But they are there if you want them and many will find them useful.

I think that this is a very good all round light for home use. It is also good when camping and I used it recently as a tent light. Suspended from the roof of the tent it lights it up very well indeed with a nice white light. The throw of the light is not that great but again if its pitch black it's good enough. The main benefit of the light is the power reduction modes. This will extend the life of the batteries to many hundreds of hours in the dimmer settings. Great when you are miles from the nearest replacements.

If you look at the pictures carefully you will see the fifth Blue extra LED hidden inside the case. What is this for? you may ask. Well have you ever tried to find a light in the dark? With this extra LED two find me modes called 'NightBeacon' can be activated. Either a constant on setting or a blink mode. You may think this would quickly flatten the batteries but they will in fact last for 1.5 to 2.5 years or 1 to 2 years in blink or constant on mode respectively. Good idea to turn this mode off when storing the light though. The mode is activated by turning the light on then holding the 'adjust' key and turning the light off. Pressing the 'adjust' key will now toggle blink and constant on modes. Holding the 'adjust' key and pressing the 'power' key will cancel the NightBeacon feature.

The unit is made from Polycarbonate or similar and is very durable. Internal webbing presses against the batteries and prevents the unit from being crushed if stood on and the rubber membrane give some degree of waterproofing. I think is a novel but very clever design for a torch. It may look more like something designed as a prop for Startrek but it usefulness far outweighs any doubts as to its looks.

There are now several models of the Eternalight. They do a more durable version of this with a magnet built in for steel surface mounting. Plus a version with a regulated power supply for constant light output over the duration of the battery life. Please see the technology associates website for more info.
