Daystate MK3 Battery Swap
Back

After last nights couple of rounds the low battery warning was flashing and beeping on my MK3.

It only done about 900 pellets since a full charge just before Newbury. They should do 3000-5000 shots before they need charging again.

So I took the stock off and measured the voltage across each of the batteries. 4.5V and 3.4V

Left it on charge all night and now have 5.870v on one and 4.483v on the other.

Looks like each battery is made up from four separate 1.2v cells so I assume that in one of them a cell has gone down.

I'll check again this evening.

I think I am still going to wait until after Quarry to get it fixed. Just got used to the new scope and managed a good score. I don't really want to remove the scope and post it anywhere.

My other MK3 is showing 5.268v and 5.276v which is what I would have expected to see.

I could swap guns and stocks and scopes but really don't want to.

Just had a reply to my same question on AirgunBBS.

David Snook is sending me two brand new batteries. I will get them in the morning.

I will fit them to the board myself. (I've done a fair bit of soldering before so I am happy with this)

Save me having to send the gun back or dismantle things.

I should be able to do it with the scope still fitted.

Well, after removing half of the sticky backed sponge backing from the PCB that covers the battery pins and spending
1/2 an hour wiping the sticky residue off and getting high on the Meths fumes I can now see the solder pads.

A quick dab of the soldering iron to the pins and the application of a de soldering pump and the batteries should now be free.

But Daystate have also used hot glue to attach the batteries to the PCB. So gentle use of a scalpel and a small screwdriver loosens them up a bit.

A final heating of the pin whilst gently pulling the battery and finally we have it removed.

Same thing for the other one and my MK3 is now battery free.

Just hope the other batteries get here in the morning and then I can put it all back together.

The removed battery is now sitting on my digital battery charger and going though a few charge / discharge cycles to see if I can wake it up again.
You can sometimes refresh a reversed charged cell this way. My charger is able to work the battery a lot harder than the MK3 ever would.
