I added this light as an afterthought to one of my other orders. I am really pleased that I did. What a great value light.

This light is designed for replacing candles or gas powered camping lights. It does provide a good replacement for candles but would struggle against the higher power of a gas lamp. But this unit is completely safe to operate and this single aspect is far more important than any other feature.

The light comes without batteries. They are installed under a removable rubber cover on the base of the light. This covers the battery compartment and the 3 way hi-off-low switch. The batteries are installed according to the markings on the metal cover plate. They are installed one up one down in series giving 3 Volts to the LED's. The batteries need pushing down firmly with the metal retainer and this need to slide under the plastic shelf to lock them into place.

The 3 Yellow/Amber LED's are mounted on the top of the light under an light diffusing lens. This is pretty effective at giving a softer move even light output compared with the bare LED's. The light output is more than enough to read by or find things in a dark room. This is true even with the light on the low setting.

The light is supplied with a lanyard for hanging the light. This is well made and is pre looped to fit into the notches cut in the sides of the light near the base. This fits well and will not pull loose when the light is suspended from it.

.The hi-off-low rocker switch is usually hidden under the rubber foot that keeps the damp and dust out of the light. It can be operated though the rubber though. I found this was easier with the edge of by fingernail as I could feel the switch moving under the cover.

The battery life is given as 18 hours on full and 30 hours on low. This gives it good duration and makes it perfect for long power outages or late nights reading in a tent. The batteries are also readily available and cheap. So a good choice for backpacking or travelling overseas. I just read the CMG web site info and it is safe to run this light on AA Lithium cells as well (These have a higher voltage and will damage some lights) this would be good for a standby emergency light that is only used periodically as Lithium cells have a far better shelf life than alkaline batteries do. They also have a higher capacity so the light will also run longer when using them.

The light is constructed from injection moulded plastic parts. The parts fit together well and the rubber tailcap is the only bit that I feel could fit slightly tighter to the light. The LED's are fitted to a printed circuit board inside the light as are the current limiting surface mount resistors. I was surprised at surface mount components. But I suppose that they are just as cheap to manufacture as normal full size components would be. It not exactly a complex multilayed PCB though. :-)

Having this has now tempted me to try new Bonfire Blaze version which has both red and white LED's in the one unit. For colour vision or preserving night vision. I will keep you posted.
